Arthritis is a common cause of joint pain, consisting primarily of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage surrounding the joints deteriorates, while rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body's immune system attacks its own joints. Gout is also a type of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. Common symptoms of arthritis include pain, stiffness, and swelling in the affected joints. Although there is no cure for arthritis, there are various treatment options available to manage the symptoms and improve quality of life.
Turmeric and saffron are natural remedies that have anti-inflammatory properties, making them useful for treating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, can suppress inflammation and reduce pain in arthritis patients. Studies have shown that curcumin's anti-inflammatory effects can result in the improved function of joints in people with rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Its antioxidant properties also help in protecting the body from free radicals that cause stress and damage to the body's cells.
Saffron contains crocin, which has anti-inflammatory effects and can help ease joint pain and stiffness. A study conducted at the Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2020 found that saffron supplementation can improve clinical outcomes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showed that taking 100mg of saffron extract daily improved symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Another study from 2018 found that saffron’ s anti-inflammatory properties may also be beneficial for treating other conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and depression.
